Before turning on your portable air conditioner for the season, one of the most important things you can do is check and clean the air filter. A dirty filter can significantly reduce cooling performance and airflow, making your AC work harder than it should.
At Aircon Rescue, we often see portable AC units not cooling properly simply because the filter hasn’t been cleaned since the previous season. Dust, pet hair and debris build up over time and restrict airflow through the machine.
Taking a few minutes to clean the filter before summer starts can improve cooling efficiency, protect the unit from unnecessary strain, and help extend the life of your portable air conditioner.
💡 Quick Tip Before Starting Your Portable AC
Before turning on your portable AC for the season, remove the air filter and make sure it is clean. A clogged filter restricts airflow and can reduce cooling performance.
Why Cleaning Your Portable AC Filter Matters
A clogged air filter can cause:
• Reduced cooling performance
• Weak airflow
• Higher energy use
• Unnecessary strain on the AC unit
• Overheating that can shorten the lifespan of the air conditioner
Cleaning the filter regularly helps your portable AC operate efficiently and reduces the risk of unnecessary wear on the unit.
How To Clean Your Portable AC Filter and Check the Coils
Examples of portable air conditioner filters. Some units have a single upper filter, while others also include a secondary lower filter protecting the condenser coils.
Most portable air conditioners have a removable air filter located behind a rear or side access panel. Some units have one filter near the top, while others may also have a second filter near the bottom that protects the condenser coils.
Before starting the unit for the season, remove the access panel and check whether your air conditioner has one or two filters that need cleaning.
Follow these steps:
Turn off and unplug the air conditioner
Locate and remove the rear or side filter panel
Remove the air filter from the unit
Vacuum dust from the filter or rinse it gently with warm water
If your unit has a second lower filter, remove and clean it the same way
Allow the filters to dry completely before reinstalling them
While the filter is removed, take a moment to look at the coils behind the filter opening. In some cases, dust, pet hair, or debris can build up on the coils if the filter has been dirty for a long period.
If you see buildup on the coils:
• Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to gently remove dust
• Avoid pressing directly on the coils, as the thin metal fins can bend easily
• Do not spray water or cleaning chemicals inside the unit
Keeping the filters clean will usually prevent debris from collecting on the coils and help your portable AC maintain proper airflow and cooling performance.
How Often Should You Clean the Filter?
Portable AC filters should typically be cleaned every 2–4 weeks during heavy summer use. Homes with pets or higher dust levels may need to clean the filter more frequently.
Checking the filter regularly helps maintain proper airflow and cooling performance throughout the season.
